family wall“We May Not Have It All Together, But Together We Have It All”

My very favorite part of my home is this wall in my dining room. This wall has a plaque with the above saying across the very top. Underneath, there is a large photo of myself and my husband. That is surrounded by a photo of each of my children. (Yes, the wall needs updating since the time I took this photo.)

I can think of no other statement that better describes us! All of my children, birthed kiddos included, have one or more mental health diagnoses. In addition, most have some pretty severe emotional and/or behavioral problems. More than half of my children come from one or more disrupted adoptions. Just about no one in this house could be described as “having it all together”. But together? A really amazing family, if I do brag on ourselves a bit.

I have one large wooden decoration that proudly states in giant capital letters “Love is Spoken Here”. I used to have it in our entry room of our old home. Early on in our lives as the parents of one teenage boy, he and I were eating breakfast together. He looked up at the sign and asked “Is that a paddle board or what?” I laughed. His observation was clear though – and valid! While I would LIKE for “love to be spoken here”, but it certainly isn’t always the case!

I had another big one that I loved. It was absolutely gorgeous. The statement was “Families are Forever”. Well, guess what? Although I believe that they certainly can be, this is absolutely not what my kids have experienced so far at all. They would look at this sign and think “Oh my gosh. This woman is a crock of insanity!” I took that big one down and replaced it with one that beautifully and simply states “Family”.

I went ahead and left up the “Live, Love, Laugh Often” sign. That is definitely a good reminder for us. I have a great one in the front room now that has a longer quote about developing character – nice for us also.

Great quotes are everywhere, I’m sure. But none is likely as perfect for my little ol’ family is “We May Not Have It All Together, But Together We Have It All”. I love it. I love my family. With luck, hard work, and some willing hearts, my kids will love it, too!

  1. First of all, I love the color of the wall. Kudos!

Secondly, I love the idea, what your decoration says… and just want to thank you for sharing it with us. :)

I agree with what Jenna said. What a cool feature in your home, a constant reminder of what being a family is about.
