Potty Training Woes

Categories: Potty Training

I’m still wavering on the start of Potty training Extravaganza 2007. Livi turned two in mid November and at around that time and even before I started hearing “ Have you started Potty training yet”. My reply was she is not ready. I don’t know if I’m missing some big signs or if we should just forge ahead. I introduced the potty when she was 18 months and we had a few weeks when she was telling me after she went in her diaper and would go on the potty whenever I placed her. She really seemed on board at that time. I had visions of happily exclaiming that by 20 months she was fully potty trained.

Then my husband went to the Icu, she regressed and potty training took a backseat to more pressing concerns. So now I’m beginning in a real low key easy going way. I give stickers and encouragement, but I still don’t see signs that she is ready. I got her a cute little tinkle time Kelly doll for Christmas, it comes with a little realistic potty and the doll really tinkles…we have potty books, potty DVD’s , big girl undies and three potty chairs. The three potty chairs I know is overkill, but I wanted a certain one – the baby bjorn that I finally found.

One potty is my sister in laws and comes apart in three pieces, which frustrates me to no end. The other one is also frustrating as the pot locks in place and is difficult to slide out to empty. So ok you veteran Potty trainers out there, when should I actively begin potty training? Am I right to wait for signs? Do those signs come naturally or would so children prefer to stay in diapers forever? At this point she shows little interest.

Top 5 Signs I’m looking for

1.Verbalizes Potty needs ( I pooped, I peed)

2.Shows interest in the potty ( I take her with me when I go to the restroom)

3.Wants to be changed ( This kid fights diaper changes)

4.More predictable poop schedule (we still struggle with diarrhea and unpredictable bowel movements)

5.Staying dryer longer, as a sign her bladder is maturing

I get 2 of the 5. Child is utterly fascinated by the potty and hates diaper changes so I continue to wait. I think it is more of a denial on my part at this point. I just don't have the patience for potty training.

We are not even close to it yet but my thoughts on it, currently anyway, are no rush. I would rather wait until they are pretty much begging to use the potty and get out of diapers than deal with messes. A friend of mine once said (in regards to breaking her child of the bottle), "I never see 18 year olds walking around with a bottle in their mouth so I'm not too worried about it; it will happen eventually". I feel the same way about potty training, at least now anyway.

Joey started showing interest around two, but a broken leg set him back. He really regressed and we did not manage to potty train until he was just shy of three.

Dawn is... Dawn. Potty training was my idea... my suggestion and thus she wanted nothing to do with it. She was a few months past three.

If I had it to do over again I would have waited until my kids were nearer three than two. It would have saved months of trying and failure.

Jaclyn was pretty much 2. I introduced the potty chair at 18 months but didn't really push it. We just started taking her to the potty regularly and sitting her on it. She never voiced her need really before we started training. I thought for months she wasn't potty trained because every so often (not daily or even weekly) she would have an accident. Never had a problem with the pooping on the potty that many have.

But then again she was backwards and stayed dry through the night long before anything else.

So as for the classic signs she really didn't show any but she was fine with going on the potty when we took her to it. I think that is key. Especially about 20 minutes after a drink.

Good luck.

Wow, your post totally brought me back to my experience last September trying to potty train my daughter (she was 22 months at the time). I had heard so many horror stories and because she is such an independent little girl I virtually had nightmares about beginning. So to be safe I did some research and found this book that totally saved me. In like 5 days I had her FULLY TRAINED (night and day). Unbelieveable.

Anyway, if you are still having troubles with your daughter - or if any of you need some extra help with your own children I highly recommend it. You can buy it (it's under $20, now I can't remember exactly how much) at www.easypottytraining.com.

Good luck to all!

I was in no hurry to potty train my DD, and kept waiting for all of those 'signs.' She really didn't show any of them, but when she was 1 month away from her 3rd birthday, I just took off the diapers and went straight into "panties." It took one week and it was done. Actually, it was quite easy. I think it's because I waited. DS turned 2 in September. He is no where NEAR being ready to potty train and I haven't even gotten him a potty yet.
