Our local newspaper ran an article about our adoption a few weeks ago- it was tilted “ A Day in the Life” it was a short 300 word article on our adoption and how we are helping Livi with sign language. They also printed a photo of the three of us. The writer mentioned that by coincidence that our daughter has my husbands eyes, my hair color and my “ peaches & cream complexion”.Upon reading that phrase I unexpectedly burst into tears.
My grandmother who passed away many years ago always told me how lucky I was to have a peaches & cream complexion. She told me this over & over, to an awkward geeky girl it meant the world that at least I had good skin. I had not heard that in decades. In fact the last time I heard that was from her. Reading it made me miss her and instantly took me back to a forgotten time & place. Its funny how something like that, a phrase, a smell can take you to your childhood. More so it made me sad that Livi wont have the kind of grandma like I had.
My grandmother was a big part of my upbringing, I fondly recall spending the night at her home, many days at a time during summer & winter breaks. I remember sneaking cookies, sitting under the willow tree and rolling down the hill in her yard. My grandma was Amazing.
She was not afraid to speak her mind and she had a huge impact on my life. She taught me to stand up straight, to use manners, and to bake. She smelled of white shoulders perfume, she was the best cook and man do I miss her.
Lets face it times have changed, our lives our busier than ever. Livi’s Grandma (My Mom) is busy, works six days a week, lives 25 miles away and visits sporadically. I know she loves Livi more than anything. That article reminded me to tell Livi how fortunate she is to have a peaches & cream complexion, and while I’m at it I will tell her all about her Great Grandma Dorothy.
