A healthy lifestyle is beneficial when learned early in life. Longer life span, more energy, and happiness and contentment all accompany good health. And what more could you want for your children? But for some families maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle isn’t easy. It takes effort. It takes work. But it is worth it in the end.
Set an Example: One of the easiest and most effective ways to teach your child about healthy living is to live healthily yourself. As you know, children watch the actions and habits of their parents. You can show them that healthy living is fun and rewarding. Along with your example, talk to your child or children about how to make healthy choices and ways to increase good health. Let them brainstorm fun ways to stay healthy, and then follow through with those ideas.
Incorporate Healthy, Delicious Snacks: If you can, have healthy snacks available to your child or children. Cut fresh fruits and vegetables and put them in the fridge. They will become a quick grab-and-go snack for a busy child, and for you. Keep a variety of healthy food around. Mix it up and try new things. Let your child pick out a new, exotic vegetable or fruit to try that week. It will not only make it a fun experience, but it will keep your healthy-snack options open and flexible.
Get the Entire Family Involved: Make staying healthy a family affair. Support from your family is a great motivator, and can keep everyone on track. As a family, plan healthy meals, healthy snacks, and times to be physically active as a unit. Involving the entire family will create a bond and strengthen your familial ties.
Participate in City Leagues and Teams: Joining sport teams, dance troupes, and the like can be very expensive. If you would like to sign your child or children up for an activity, consider a city league or team. These usually cost a lot less than, say, a private dance studio. Your child can have a fun, healthy time while you don’t need to stress about financing their activities.
Just Play: If you don’t have the time or money for organized sports or dance teams, let your child simply play as children do. Take them to the park, set up play dates at their friends’ houses, or participate in a family walk-a-thon for a good cause. There is a myriad of options. Get creative and have some fun.
Becoming and staying a healthy family is possible with just a little bit of effort. With not much more effort than you already put forth, you can teach your children and yourself how to live a healthy lifestyle, have fun while staying active, and eat healthy foods that taste great.
