Easter - Fun Family Activities

easterEaster is coming up quickly! Here are a few ideas for activities you might enjoy doing with your family.

1) Easter egg treasure hunt. Number the eggs from #1 to #??. Starting at the beginning, leave a clue with each egg telling your child how to get to the next egg.

2) Surprise neighbors with Easter eggs all over their yard. With this activity, it’s probably best to use plastic eggs so that nothing spoils before the neighbors find out about it. (I loved this idea especially so because I could see potential for turning this into a service project, just in the simple doing. I love ideas where I can get my kids thinking about others!)

3) For toddlers/preschoolers/young schoolers, get baskets of plastic eggs for indoor hunts. My kids have loved to do these over and over and over… Turn them into educational games by saying “If you find the blue one, you get a sticker”……or “Find 5 eggs” – use as a counting game.

4) Games with egg hunts. These can be done indoors/outdoors, with edible or plastic eggs. Play hot/cold. Hide specific eggs and give directions or clues to find the eggs. These all work on direction following and on following multi-step tasks.

5) Cooking. Use the holiday to help your children gain some skills with cooking. (Not to mention that cooking together is one of the top ways I know of to develop more bonding and attachment with your child.) Helping to boil eggs for decorating is a very simple “recipe” to work with. Kids can have fun helping make Deviled eggs as well.

6) Make simple Easter baskets –

  • woven construction paper baskets

  • green strawberry pint baskets with pipe cleaner handles

  • cut down milk jugs (any size, cardboard or plastic. Use “extra” for the handles)

  • paint any existing basket, updating to new colors or fun patterns

7) “Carrots”. We make bundles of these every year to share with other friends/kids. I could only find a photo of the Jelly Belly version which is similar, but not exactly the same. I hope my description is somewhat usable. You will need yellow or orange cellophane wrap (I get it from the dollar store every year), green raffia, jellybeans, clear tape. carrot

*Cut cellophane into square or rectangle, about 12-16” on the “working side”. (If cellophane, double up.)

*Roll cellophane into a cone. Fill with jellybeans. Lay a “pinch” of raffia across the top of the cellophane to be carrot leaves. Tie cone shut with extra piece of raffia. Use one or two tiny pieces of clear tape to be sure “carrot cone” stays closed.

We make several of these and lay them into an Easter basket and deliver to friends. Really cute.
