Diaper rash Dillema

I interrupt this regularly scheduled blog to ask for your advice regarding diaper rash. At the moment we are dealing with a stubborn one and I’m not sure if I should call the pediatrician. The one my girl has is bright red, raw and has open sores- sorry for being so graphic. I have tried special ointment, desitn, two types of balmex, and Johnson’s 3& 1- some are zinc bases, others are like Vaseline. My poor baby is just miserable.

This is a persistent rash and instead if improving it seems to be spreading. We would get an occasional rash when dealing with her Giardia but nothing that lasted this long. This has been going on for a week. I can’t think of anything new in her diet. I have not changed diaper brands. I’m even using a warm washcloth instead of wipes. I change her very regularly. I’m going to try aveeno oatmeal bath today and let her wear her big girl cotton underwear. My parenting books are no help.

How long does a typical diaper rash persist? In the past she maybe had it only for two days if that before it cleared up. This one is not clearing up. I called the pediatrician and he said to use neosporin, vaseline and call in a week if it does not improve. I have tried that and while it seemed to get better yesterday, today its back again. Its a moist rash and my instincts tell me just to pat it dry and let it air out. On the other hand i want to put some type of barrier on it to keep it from getting worse.

I just dont know what to do. Any advice? I would appreciate any remedies that have worked for you.

Lauri -
Could it be a yeast infection? You could try athlete's foot medication (I'm not joking) in the area or if you have any grownup lady yeast infection meds (I mean the cream kind, not any type of oral treatment) around the house that will also work. It won't hurt if that's not it.
Another great type of diaper cream is one that contains goldenseal and claendula. You can usually find this type of cream in a natural foods store. It will also help if it's a yeastie thing.
Yeasts are naturally occuring in the body but sometimes things get out of whack - including something as innocuous as a couple of days of a higher sugar than usual diet or even a day sitting around in a wet bathing suit, for instance. I have seen this before in children, my own included (although mine, for some reason, tend to get yeasts behind their ears!)

Orange Juice might also cause this. Be sure to water down all juices and cut out orange entirely.

Yes. Or lemon juice or even tomato products.
Poor pumpkin!

I wondered about yeast.. her doc said I could try a med for foot fungus called lotremin( spelling?) I do dilute her juice and she only gets 4-6 oz per day. I worry about that adult yeast cream burning her? I know its burns me when I have had yeast infections.
Thanks for the help

Poor baby!

First, if there are open sores, it's time to call the pediatrician. (Looks like you already have, since the post?)

Second, you might consider a day or two spent diaper-free in an easily cleaned room.

Third, yes, it might be a yeast infection, and any of the anti-fungal creams could help.

Best of luck!

Yes, the OJ comment is because of the acid. I learned the hard way :) Diet should help a lot. If you can, cut out all dairy for a day. ....That should help the healing as well.

Good luck!

I don't know why it would burn you - I used to get yeast infections constantly (I've since changed my diet which has made a huge difference) and it never burned. Not to be too graphic, but you don't need to insert the yeast medication, just spread it on the affected area.

The OJ comment (as well as my tomato product) probably had to do with the acidity of it. I know my older son sucked on half a lemon once when he was about 9 months old (we thought it was so funny that he liked it) and the next day it was like someone had poured acid into his diaper! We didn't think it was so cute then,

Severe Diaper Rash Cure Recipe:

Mix Hydrocortisone cream and Lotrimin cream then apply. Then cover that with Destin.

Try an over the counter medication for yeast infections.

Lauri,
It sounds like she may have a yeast infection. Jaclyn went through this in the spring. I finally called and the nurse told me to get gyna-lotrimin and put it on there. But since it was so pricey and they all seemed to come with applicators that were for adults I talked to the pharmacist who recommended the lotrimin used for athletes feet. I guess it is the same thing in different packaging. Jaclyn's wasn't as bad as you are describing but it would seem to get better and then be back again. After a week of the lotrimin covered with vaseline it cleared up and has stayed gone. I guess this is common in little girls.

Sorry for the length but call her doctors office and talk to the nurse to see if they think it could be a yeast infection.

Good luck,
Lauren

Ok. Perhaps I should have read the comments before posting mine.

lol

I am glad it is helping. But also put the vaseline on over the lotimin creme. That helped a lot.

And this may be too much info but Jaclyn ended up liking it. That it felt good. he he he he he
