paper_family_ii-I love the word family and how it has evolved. 50 years ago, if we would have asked a group of people what a family was it would have been such a boring answer. “A dad, a Mom, and 2.5 children.” Maybe they would have gotten really crazy and added a pet. I love the fact that we are living in a generation where all families can be accepted. I was a young mom. I had my first son at 19 and decided to become a solo parent. His biological father was not the kind of person that I wanted to influence my child so I figured that me alone was better than us together. It was the best decision that I have ever made. Not only are my son and I close, not only did I really see what I had the courage to do, but I also got the power to choose the right father for my son. Wow! What a gift to be able to give a child, a hand picked dad. The process was not quick or easy. I had rules, many rules and guidelines that had to be followed. I even had a check list.

I make it sound like I set out on a mission to find my child a dad. I didn’t… I made my list and put it away. I decided to get an education, be the best mom that I could be, embrace being a single parent to an amazing child, and live life. I never really even thought about what it would be like to find a new man and I dang sure didn’t even think I would get married. 6 years later, I did. I got married and shortly after my husband made the decision to adopt my son. (I will get more in to detail on how that changed the course of our lives later.) My point today is to just celebrate the fact that we are an amazing family who picked each other and made it work. I have since had another baby and we could not be happier. Our family is complete. It might not be the family of 50 years ago but it is mine and I would not trade it for the world.
